Pakistan’s role in the World Athletics 2025 Championships is undergoing a change due to injuries affecting several athletes as the event approaches.
Sprinter Tameen Khan has become the most recent athlete to withdraw after suffering an injury during training last week. The 100 m specialist, who was set to leave for Tokyo on September 9, experienced a setback in a practice session three days ago. According to journalist Faizan Lakhani, she has been recommended to take at least two weeks off for rest and rehabilitation, which means she will miss the championships.
This setback is a significant disappointment not only for Tameen but also for Pakistan’s athletics team, as she was expected to compete in the prestigious 100 m event against the world’s top sprinters.
Tameen’s absence is especially disheartening considering her emergence as the fastest woman in the country in recent years. The sprinter from Peshawar has held the title of Pakistan’s fastest female athlete twice and earlier this year shared her aspirations to excel on the global stage.
With Tameen’s injury, Pakistan’s announced team has diminished even further. Shajar Abbas is also in recovery, and with no clear updates on Yasir Sultan or Mueed Baloch, it is generally anticipated that Arshad Nadeem may be Pakistan’s only representative in Tokyo.
Arshad himself is coming back from surgery, which raises concerns about the possibility of another medal-less performance for Pakistan at the World Athletics Championships.
While setbacks may alter the lineup, they do not change the objective. All attention now focuses on Arshad Nadeem and whether he can create another moment of brilliance to elevate Pakistan’s flag on the international stage.
