Donald Trump may meet Russian President Vladimir Putin soon
According to the French news agency AFP, the statement came after talks in Moscow between the US special representative and the Russian leader, which President Trump described as “very productive”.
A possible high-level meeting was discussed in a telephone conversation between President Trump and Zelensky.
A senior government source in Kiev said that the call included NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, as well as the leaders of Britain, Germany and Finland.
When asked during a press conference at the White House on Wednesday when he would meet with the leaders of Ukraine and Russia, the US president said, “There is a good opportunity and it will happen soon.”
He gave no indication of where the meeting with Putin might take place.
This would be the first high-level meeting between the US and Russian leadership since former President Joe Biden met with his counterpart in Geneva in June 2021.
The New York Times and the CC, citing people familiar with the meeting proceedings, said the US is planning to meet with the president early next week and then wants a three-way meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky and Putin.
Ukrainian President Zelensky said on Wednesday that Russia now seems to be inclined to a ceasefire and that the pressure on it is working, but the important thing is that it does not betray us and the United States in moving forward.
Trump’s telephone conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky took place after US representative Steve Wittkow met with the Russian leader in Moscow.
The Kremlin called the meeting productive.
The development comes as the deadline for new sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine war approaches.
President Trump wrote on social media that “tremendous progress has been made and has since briefed some of his EU allies.”
According to him, “everyone agrees that the war must end and we will work on it in the coming days and weeks.”
A few minutes later, a senior US official said that “secondary sanctions” were expected to be implemented within two days.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Vitkov was bringing Moscow’s proposal for a ceasefire, which would be discussed with Ukraine and European allies.
It should be noted that Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine on February 24, 2022, after which the fighting has been ongoing.
Russia claims ownership of Ukraine, while Ukraine wants to join the European Union.
The United States, Europe, and other Western countries are supporting Ukraine and providing it with weapons, while pressure is being put on Russia to end the war.
There have been attempts to start negotiations in this regard, but the war has not yet ended.
