Investigation launched into the assassination of General Fanel Saro
Russia’s Investigative Committee announced on Monday it had opened an investigation into the “murder” of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarov, head of the General Staff’s training department. Authorities also said the possible involvement of Ukrainian special forces was among the issues being investigated.
The Russian investigators, who are investigating serious crimes, said that Sarvarov was seriously injured when an explosive device planted under his car exploded in the south of the Russian capital, and he eventually died in hospital.
Media reports on General Fanil Sarov
Media outlets reported that a white car with the driver inside exploded at around 7 am Moscow time (04:00 GMT) on Yasenevaya Street.
Photos from the scene of the accident showed a badly damaged car. Investigators and forensic teams were also at the scene, officials said.
“An explosive device was detonated on Yasennaya Street in Moscow, and Sarvarov, the head of the General Staff’s operational directorate, died from his injuries,” Svetlana Petrenko, a representative of the Investigative Committee, told the Russian state news agency.
Petrenko added that the Moscow Central Investigative Directorate has opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 105 of the Russian Criminal Code, which covers murder committed in a socially dangerous manner, and Article 222.1, which deals with illegal trafficking in explosives.
He added that investigators are pursuing several possible motives for the murder.
