Trump Deploys Nuclear Subs After Russian Official’s War Warning
Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced Friday that he ordered two nuclear submarines to strategic locations following provocative statements by Dmitry Medvedev, a top Russian security official.
What Sparked the Tension?
- On Monday, Medvedev (Russia’s ex-president and current Security Council deputy) warned that Trump’s ultimatums to end the Ukraine war could push the U.S. and Russia toward direct conflict.
- “Each new demand is a step toward war—not with Ukraine, but with America,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
- Trump had earlier shortened a deadline for Russia to negotiate peace with Ukraine from 50 days to under two weeks, threatening heavy tariffs on Moscow’s trade partners.
Trump’s Response
On Friday, Trump said on Truth Social:
- He deployed submarines in response to Medvedev’s “foolish and inflammatory” remarks.
- “Words have consequences. I hope this doesn’t escalate,” he added.
Medvedev’s Counterattack
- Medvedev mocked Trump’s reaction, suggesting Russia’s stance is justified.
- He referenced Russia’s “Dead Hand” system—a Cold War-era automatic nuclear retaliation protocol—as a warning.
India Dragged Into the Feud
Trump also criticized Russia-India trade ties, calling both economies “dead” and dismissing U.S. business interests with India due to high tariffs.
